The Morality of Whack-a-mole

The United States of America is currently involved in many conflicts around the world. Such as Afghanistan where we have been at war for more than 10 years, Syria where we are funding the rebels in the civil war, Pakistan and Yemen where we have been drone bombing various villages trying to kill Al Qaeda or Taliban militants, Mali where we are helping the French with intelligence and transportation. As well as ongoing problems with Iran and North Korea.

If this seems like a lot it's because it is. We have been in a state of constant war since 2001. Killing at least a million people. Why is this ok? Why do we still believe in the idea of American exceptionalism when in the past we have likely killed more people through our actions than we have saved. And for what? The world is just as dangerous if not more dangerous than on September 10, 2001. Some might call me unpatriotic for saying such a thing. But I'm just calling a spade a spade. You can't claim a moral authority and assassinate american citizens without trial. You can't claim to fight terror and have a rate of collateral damage that is acceptable. The citizens of Pakistan and Yemen are in constant fear of the drones overhead; that they will be the acceptable collateral damage. We have become just like the people who attacked us on 911. We kill innocents in name of the "greater good".

If this policy worked in getting rid of terror in the world it would be one thing. But this policy creates more terrorists. It's like a game of whack-a-mole. Kill one and 3 more pop up. The terrorists use the drone killings as recruiting tools to try and kill americans.

As a society we need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves, "Are we ok with our government killing innocents in our name?". How would you feel if one of your family members were collateral damage? I have a feeling you would want justice. I know I would.
